Lying is bad

Our government is now run by liars ... Trump, Sean Spicer, Sarah Sanders, General Kelly, and most likely droves of other administration minions, Republican toadies, and conservative apologists. Of course we all lie once in a while - even other animals do it - but most of us try not to lie and most of us understand how important it is to be able to rely on a common congruence between what people aver and actual reality. No one can make good and informed decisions if they are given false data. Liars lie for one reason, to advantage themselves at the expense of others. Liars are cowards. And those cowards are running our country.

So many things worry me about this administration, not the least of which is the phenomenon of the "new normal." In the early weeks of Trump's presidency a lot of op-ed alarm was raised about the importance of foreign countries being able to rely on the president's word, and how Trump's casual disregard of the truth (I don't think they'd started calling it lying yet) made that reliance impossible. But I haven't heard that particular alarm raised recently. Much of the public--certainly those who voted for him--take an "he is what he is" attitude, and the presidency, too, "is what it is." It'll never be the same.

PS: It's so ironic--bizarre even--that he attacked Hillary over and over and over during the campaign for lying. "Hillary's lies" was practically a buzzword. I heard people say they could never vote for her because she was such a liar. And there was Trump, on TV for all to see, saying things like, "I know more than the generals" and all sorts of other made-up stuff he thought made him sound good, and they thought he was okay. Better than okay. A "successful businessman."

Hi Susan. Yeah, a normal person would be aware of the irony and the inconsistency of what they were doing if they acted like Trump, but he isn't a normal person. I think he's deranged. The other bad guys are those who aren't deranged but who enable his craziness. I just watched the white house press briefing today and Sarah Sanders lied her ass off, as she so often does, in defense of Trump's lies.
